About

Audiences describe Boehlke's work Sunken Cities:

"ethereal and hypnotic"   "meditative conjuring"   "a private mythos"   "galactic"   "timeless power"

Renee Boehlke is a choreographer and director based in Seattle and originally from Atlanta. Her live works have been presented at diverse venues in Seattle and Chicago, and her films have been screened across the United States and in Bangalore, Bucharest, Mexico City, and Vancouver. She has been awarded residencies including The Bridge Project at Velocity Dance Center and a self-directed residency at Grünewald Guild.

She graduated with a BFA in Dance with honors from Cornish College of the Arts, where she gained a reputation for subterranean leadership and creative interpretation of class requirements. She also trained at American Dance Festival and summer programs internationally. A few influential teachers were Wade Madsen, Corrie Befort, George Staib, T. Lang, and Nalini Jones.

Renee loves to produce performances which she pursued as executive intern for American Dance Festival's 2015 season and rehearsal/production assistant to Jessica Jobaris, in addition to independent endeavors and videography collaborations with Dylan Ward/Sleep Nod. She currently works as an event coordinator at Seattle Art Museum, ACT Theatre, and 10 degrees.

Her movement is lush and nebulous, mysterious yet accessible, and saturated with natural and folkloric imagery. She begins from internal sensation and personal perception, expanding into patterns across space. Themes that inspire her include identity, displacement, cultural dissonance, power dynamics, and coping strategies. She welcomes multiplicity of interpretation. She is known for soft and subtle expression with surprising strength and distinctive presence.
